Those who love the outdoors, spectacular scenery, intriguing wildlife, fresh air and wide open spaces — will fall in love with our region's excellent national parks and majestic rainforests!

Eungella National Park is the most visited natural attraction in the region — although when there, you still get the feeling you're one of the few people lucky enough to be experiencing the magnificent environment that surrounds you. Admire breathtaking views from Sky Window lookout or the old Eungella Chalet, or set off along more than 25kms of lush rainforest walking trails. Do not miss the opportunity to spot PLATYPUS at Broken River. You are most likely to spot them in the early mornings and late afternoons. Eungella is little over an hour's drive west from Mackay through the scenic Pioneer Valley.

Finch Hatton Gorge, on the way to Eungella, is a local's favourite particularly in the humid summer months. But no matter what time of year you visit, we are sure you will enjoy the rainforest walks and a refreshing dip at Araluen and Wheel of Fire waterfalls.

Cape Hillsborough National Park, located 40 minutes drive from Mackay, is a small coastal park where the rainforest literally meets the reef. Friendly wallabies that come down onto the beach each morning at sunrise have been well photographed and often used to promote Australia to international visitors. The headland area contains several good walking trails, some showcasing Aboriginal history from the Juipera Tribe, and is a popular fishing spot.

Both Eungella and Cape Hillsborough make for an excellent trip from Mackay City staying at one of the camping areas nestled within the national park and rainforest. Your Johnno's Camper Trailer can take you to this beautiful region.

Explorer Captain Cook first sailed along the coast of Mackay in 1770, naming one of the area's most remote national parks — Cape Palmerston. On the coast, south of Sarina, Cape Palmerston is accessible by 4WD only. Also a popular fishing and camping area — be prepared to bring all provisions including fresh water and fuel.

Kinchant, Teemburra and Eungella Dams are located within the area and are popular for fishing and watersports.
